From a dark room, Vito Scaletta tells of his origins. Born in Sicily in 1925, Vito's family was poor, and they emigrated to the United States when he was only eight years old. In 1932 they arrived in Empire Bay, ready to start a new life, but upon arrival, they only found more poverty. Vito's father began working on the docks, earning a miserable wage. Already in his youth, Vito and his best friend, Joe Barbaro, dedicated themselves to committing petty crimes. In 1943, Vito was arrested after smashing the window of a jewelry store. The American army needed young men who spoke Italian, so they offered him two options: go to fight in World War II or go to jail, Vito chose the first option.
